DIY Entryway Storage: Benches, Cubbies, Hooks and Shelves

Good entryway storage makes the first few feet inside the door work harder without blocking the path.

Assign a place to each category

Shoes need low storage, coats and bags need hanging space, and small items need a shelf, tray or drawer. Design from those categories.

A bench is useful when people sit to put on shoes and the room has enough depth. In a tight hallway, wall storage may be the better use of space.

A built-in can make an awkward nook useful. A freestanding unit is easier to relocate and may be the better choice if the room could change.
