Design around the routine

Count the shoes, bags and coats that actually collect near the door. Decide what should hang, sit on a shelf, go in a cubby or disappear behind a door.

Useful project combinations

A bench plus hooks may be enough. Larger spaces can combine a bench, shoe cubbies, upper shelves and a tall cabinet. Keep the walking path clear.

Freestanding or built-in

Freestanding pieces are easier to move and modify. Built-ins can use awkward wall space efficiently but require more careful fitting and attachment.
