Decide the job

Is the bench mainly a seat, a shoe-storage unit, a lid-top box or part of a larger hall tree? That choice changes the structure and complexity.

Size for the room

Measure width and depth against the walking path. For built-ins, check walls and floors for out-of-square conditions before relying on a nominal opening size.

Storage adds complexity
