DIY vs Buy Furniture: A Practical Decision Checklist
Building can give you a better fit or a project you enjoy. Buying can be faster, simpler and sometimes less expensive once materials, tools and finishing are counted.
Compare the real cost of building and buying
Compare the actual project, not the idea of “DIY.” Price the lumber or sheet goods, hardware, finish, consumables and any tools you would need specifically for the build. Then compare that with a finished item of similar size, material and quality.
Reasons to build beyond price
- Custom dimensions for an awkward space
- Control over material and finish
- The satisfaction of building the piece
- The ability to repair or modify what you made
Reasons buying may make more sense
- No fabrication time
- No project-specific tool learning
- Predictable finished appearance before purchase
- Potentially lower total cost for mass-produced pieces
A five-question test
- Do I need a custom size or function?
- Do I already have the required tools or want to learn them?
- Can I source suitable materials?
- Is the plan within my skill and safety comfort level?
- Would I still want to build it if the savings were small or zero?
If the answer is build
Next, estimate materials and vet the plan before making your first cut.
